Journey to Portugal with Pilgrimage Chaplain

OCT 01          CHECK-IN AT NAIA TERMINAL 1 AT 1730HRS/ DEPARTURE FROM MANILA TO LISBON, PORTUGAL 

 

OCT 02           LISBON

Upon arrival in Lisbon, we will celebrate a private Mass at one of the Catholic Churches. Rest of the time is free before we transfer to the hotel for check-in, dinner and overnight.

 

OCT 03           LISBON  

After breakfast, we will have a half-day guided tour of Lisbon, including a photo stop at Jeronimos Monastery and the ancient Belem Tower erected to protect it. Entrance to Padrao dos Descob-Discovery. Marvel at the Monument to the Discoveries. You will see the spacious avenues of the Lower Town and across the tree-shaded squares. Pass beneath the hilltop Bairro Alto to the Terreiro do Paco. Rest of the time is free at your own leisure. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

 

OCT 04           LISBON / LAGOS

Breakfast and check out. Start of our long distance drive, crossing the River Tagus to reach Lagos, a coastal fishing port nestled on the bay of Meia Praia. Lagos is a historic centre of the Portuguese Age of Discovery, frequent home of Henry the Navigator, historical shipyard and, at one time, centre of the European slave trade. After free time to explore, continue to your hotel for check-in, dinner and overnight.

 

OCT 05           LAGOS / EVORA

Breakfast and check-out. Long distance drive to the medieval walled city of Evora where cathedrals, churches, aqueducts and ancient castle walls all serve to create the feeling that this beautiful city is a living, breathing museum to Portugal’s rich past. Have a guided tour to explore the highlights of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. View the Roman Temple (Temple of Diana) and visit the Cathedral and Cloister, as well as the Cathedral of Bones (Capela dos Ossos), an extraordinary 17th century chapel made of bones. Transfer to the hotel for check-in, dinner and overnight.

 

OCT 06        EVORA / MONSARAZ / EVORA

Breakfast at the hotel. Travel to the striking white village of Monsaraz and take in the spectacular views from the castle ruins. Meet a local boat captain and hear tales of life upon the water during your leisurely Monsaraz Cruise. Return to Evora. Rest of the time is free on your own. Have dinner at a local restaurant and overnight at the hotel.

 

OCT 07           EVORA / OBIDOS / FATIMA

Breakfast and check-out at the hotel. Journey to the fortified town of Obidos. Have a photo stop at the Main Square. At this square, you will see where a pillory was used to humiliate and punish criminals in the 15th century. It’s decorated with the image of a net in remembrance of the fishermen who recovered Queen Eleanor’s son after he died near the Tagus River. Visit the St. Mary’s Church. Though much of it has been destroyed over the years, the structure has been reconstructed, and the inside is covered with beautiful tiles. Continue to Fatima. Have a half-day guided tour to visit the Our Lady of Fatima Basilica. See the house of Francisco and Jacinta and the house of Lucia. Transfer to the hotel for check-in, dinner and overnight. In the evening, you may wish to participate at the Candle Light Procession and Rosary.

 

OCT 08           FATIMA / TOMAR

After breakfast and check-out, we will drive to Tomar. Visit the Templar Castle Tomar and the Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the Templars’ Rotunda and glimpse the day-to-day life of a warrior monk. See the Manueline Window, a national masterpiece and visit the Synagogue of Tomar and its small Jewish museum. Rest of the time is free at leisure. Proceed to the hotel for check-in, dinner and overnight.

 

OCT 09           TOMAR / COIMBRA

Breakfast and check-out at the hotel. Drive to Coimbra. Have a half-day guided tour. Have some time for a photo stop at the Old Town before visiting the Coimbra University. You will see the Royal Palace (the Capelos Room, the Private Examination Room and the Arms Room), St. Michael Chapel and the Joanina Library (Noble Floor, Middle Floor, Academic Prison).  Transfer to the hotel for check-in, dinner and overnight.

 

OCT 10           COIMBRA / GUIMARAES / PORTO

Breakfast and check-out at the hotel. Drive to Guimaraes. Have a guided tour to admire the views from the Guimaraes Castle and explore the cobbled streets and cozy squares. Visit the Nossa Senhora da Consolacao Church and a photo stop at the pretty Largo Republica do Brasil avenue. Continue on to Porto. Transfer to hotel for check-in, dinner and overnight.

 

OCT 11           PORTO

After breakfast, have a full day guided tour of the city. Visit the Porto Cathedral, the oldest surviving structure; the Iglesia de San Martin de Cedofeita; the gothic Igreja de São Francisco; the remnants of the city walls and a few 15th-century houses. The baroque style is well represented in the city in the elaborate gilt work interior decoration of the churches of St. Francis (São Francisco) and St. Claire (Santa Clara). Embark on a relaxing Douro River Cruise 6 Bridges. Rest of the day at your own leisure. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

 

OCT 12           PORTO / LISBON / MANILA

Breakfast at the hotel and check out. Long distance transfer to Lisbon airport for your flight back to Manila.
